Skating Stars To Honor DC Plane Crash Victims, Support Families With Tribute Show

A star-studded lineup of figure skating icons will perform in a tribute show honoring the 67 people killed in the plane crash over the Potomac River in Washington, DC.

"Legacy On Ice" will be held at Capital One Arena at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Mar. 2. Several Olympic and world champions will skate at the fundraiser, including Brian Boitano, Nathan Chen, Peggy Fleming, Nancy Kerrigan, and Johnny Weir.

The two-hour program will blend live performances and storytelling, recognizing the victims and their families after the crash on Wednesday, Jan. 29. An American Airlines plane and an Army Black Hawk helicopter collided in the air over the river near Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport just before 9 p.m.

All 67 people on both aircraft died. The plane's passengers included 28 skaters, coaches, and relatives who were returning home from the 2025 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas, according to U.S. Figure Skating.

Two teen Boston skaters, their mothers, and two esteemed coaches from the Skating Club of Boston were among those lost. Their deaths shattered a tight-knit community where athletes train together six or seven days a week.

A New Jersey native and her teen son, a rising star in figure skating, were also killed. Spencer Lane, who had left his public high school to pursue his Olympic dreams, shared a final photo from inside the plane before takeoff.

Spencer Lane and his coaches, Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, were killed in the mid-air plane crash over Washington DC Wednesday, Jan. 29.

Beloved coach Alexandr "Sasha" Kirsanov was also among the victims. The longtime Ice World mentor had guided generations of skaters.

The "Legacy On Ice" program was created in response to the tragedy. Proceeds will benefit victims' families and first responders through the Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation.

The two-hour program will feature performances by some of the biggest names in figure skating:

  • Olympic champions: Nathan Chen, Peggy Fleming, Scott Hamilton, Ilia Kulik, Kristi Yamaguchi
  • World and national medalists: Jason Brown, Amber Glenn, Gracie Gold, Nancy Kerrigan, Isabeau Levito, Paul Wylie
